How is take-home pay calculated in 2026?
United Kingdom (2026/27 tax year)
- Personal Allowance: £12,570 tax-free (reduced by £1 for every £2 earned above £100,000, reaching zero at £125,140).
- Income Tax: 20% basic rate up to £50,270, 40% higher rate up to £125,140, 45% additional rate above that.
- National Insurance (Class 1, employee): 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% above £50,270.
United States (2026 tax year, federal)
- Standard deduction: $16,100 (Single), $32,200 (Married Filing Jointly), $24,150 (Head of Household).
- Federal income tax: seven progressive brackets from 10% to 37%, depending on filing status.
- FICA: 6.2% Social Security (up to the $184,500 wage base) plus 1.45% Medicare, with an extra 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax above $200,000 ($250,000 for joint filers).
Note: the US estimate covers federal tax only — it does not include state income tax (which varies by state), pre-tax deductions like 401(k), or health insurance premiums. The UK estimate does not include pension auto-enrolment, student loans, or Scottish income tax bands.
Frequently asked questions
Is overtime pay taxed at a higher rate?
No. Overtime is taxed the same way as regular pay. It can push part of your income into a higher tax bracket, but that higher rate only applies to the portion of income above the threshold — not your whole paycheck.
What’s the difference between an hourly-to-salary calculator and a take-home pay calculator?
An hourly-to-salary calculator converts your hourly rate into an annual gross salary. A take-home pay (net pay) calculator goes a step further and subtracts income tax and mandatory deductions such as UK National Insurance or US FICA, so you can see what actually hits your bank account.
Does this calculator include US state tax or UK student loan repayments?
Not yet. It currently estimates UK Income Tax and National Insurance, and US federal income tax plus FICA (Social Security and Medicare). State income taxes, pension contributions, and student loan deductions are not included.
How accurate is this take-home pay estimate?
It uses official 2026 tax year thresholds published by HMRC and the IRS, so it’s a close estimate for most employees — but your real payslip may differ slightly depending on your tax code, benefits-in-kind, or additional deductions.
